I attended my very first PhillyBurbs WordPress Meetup last week. It was a lot of fun! While I was there, Liam gave me a 2014 WordCamp Philly t-shirt. When he handed it to me, I jokingly said he should make a quilt with all of the t-shirts. Then I got ta thinkin’.
It’s not a quilt, but it is a pillow. And here’s how.
Yesterday I went to Ikea and in the back of my mind had the idea for making a pillow out of this t-shirt. It was a size XL so wasn’t sure I’d wear it but wanted to do something with it. While at Ikea, I saw some rather large throw pillow inserts and I’m glad I held out on buying one because while I was at AC Moore tonight (my other favorite store), I found the perfect pillow insert measuring 16″x12″.

To make sure I was cutting it to the right size, I got out my huge pad of sketch paper and cut a pattern from it, giving me a half inch seam allowance all the way around (17″x13″ for those keeping track).

I used my rotary cutter, but a pair of scissors would have worked just fine.
I sewed it around 3 of the sides, leaving one of the shorter sides open so I could put in the pillow insert.

After inserting the pillow, you’ll have to pin the open end so you can either get in there with a sewing machine or hand stitch that puppy shut. I used my sewing machine, but because jersey is a little hard to work with without a serger, my seam is a bit wavy.
That’s all, folks!

This is so cool! Nice work!
Awesome. I’m sending this link to my wife. She’s huge into repurposing clothing. This is the best idea for all those event t-shirts hanging in my closet.
So many great WordCamp shirts I should do this to! Thanks for the instructions!
