This past weekend I attended the first ever all-women hackathon, LadyHacks in Philadelphia. I have watched the Girl Develop It group in Meetup for a while now but haven’t been able to go to one of their events. So this was my first experience at any kind of women in tech events. And let me just say that it was amazing.
It was the least competitive, egoless atmosphere.
Most came from non-technical backgrounds (SheTech, for example, was produced by four English majors) and the teams received mentorship from local female leaders.
My group worked on creating a resource site for Philadelphia women in tech, which we named She Tech Philly. We used WordPress which we all had some experience with already. I learned that you can use RSS feeds to populate content into your website. So cool!
Never have I imagined ever getting on stage to present (though I didn’t do any of the speaking) a project at a technology event. Thank you to Tristin Hightower and Sondra Willhite for organizing and gathering all of us feminist interneters in Philadelphia for this great event.
In conclusion, I would absolutely 100% for sure attend something like this again.
