MAMP’s MySQL Server Won’t Start?

Several times I have started MAMP to find that the MySQL server won’t turn on.  The light just stays red. If this happens, open Activity Monitor and look for mysqld processes.  Quit them.  Restart MySQL database in MAMP.  Should do the trick.
